Lamb and Calf day
Gala

Lamb, Calf and Pet Day: This is scheduled for Term 4 2007, typically around Mid-October.

Children can bring along their Pet Calf and/or Lamb for judging. Representatives from the Manawatu-Orua Boys and Girls Agricultural Club will judge these events for Calves and Lambs: Care and Attention, Leading, and for lambs, Calling.

Entries for all animals will need to be with the school by the start of September (actual date available from the Office closer to the event.  Entry forms will be available in the school newsletter from late August through early September, or ask at the School Office. Entries for lambs and calves will likely cost $2 each - this is passed to the Agricultural club to cover costs of prize cards etc.

There is a website sponsored by Livestock Improvement that has been set up to provide information on the rearing, care and training of Calves. Advice is provided on looking after the animals, and their presentation and training, as well as maintaining the Care Diary. The website is at www.calfclub.co.nz   Children are encouraged to take their animals to the branch competition at Rongotea and/or the A&P show subsequent to the School Lamb and Calf Day. The Calf club advice relates just to Calves, but Lamb raisers can get ideas by reading the advice too...  If you are at all serious, check out the calfclub website in plenty of time so you know what is expected when you get your calf! Click on the link above, or the logo. If this link doesn't work, it should become active by mid 2006 in preparation for th enew season competition.

Children without lambs or calves may enter a Pet in the Pet competition. As this competition is not part of the Agricultural club competition, there is no entry fee. Children are judged on their knowledge of their pet, and their understanding of its needs and involvement in, and commitment to, it's care. This competition will take place at the same time as the lamb and calf judging in a different area.

OTHER EVENTS

A variety of indoor exhibits are prepared by the children both at school and at home. Cooking, Constructions, Modelling, Decorating - all sorts of activities.

There is always a family cake competition as well - one of the highlights of the Tiritea School Lamb and Calf day - it's grown into a hot competition over the years. The cakes are donated to the school and auctioned off: Check out one year's winning entry that looked like a box of chocks: Yum! Our Photo gallery on this website has some more pictures of these brilliant cakes. At the end of the day, cakes are auctioned off to the highest bidders: a lot of hilarity and fun, some of these cakes bring in some amazing bids, and this is a great fun fundraiser each year. Each family should put their thinking cap on to come up with an idea for their cake!

Lamb and Calf Day is a Saturday, and attendance is expected but not compulsory. It is not a formal school day as it has been in the past due to changes in the regulations by the MOE which prevent schools declaring themselves open on weekend days. This means that the school will not close on the subsequent local A&P Friday show day as has been the case in the past when regulations did allow this.
